New Perimeter teaches on access to justice and pro bono in Colombia

New Perimeter, DLA Piper's nonprofit affiliate that provides long-term pro bono legal assistance in under-served regions around the world, recently taught two online courses on pro bono to law students at the Universidad del Rosario in Bogotá, Colombia.

During the courses, which were held on March 23, Lisa Dewey, DLA Piper’s pro bono partner and director of New Perimeter, and Sara Andrews, senior international pro bono counsel and assistant director of New Perimeter, spoke to two groups of approximately 35 undergraduate students about why lawyers provide pro bono services and how students can get involved in pro bono over the course of their legal careers.

In addition to the trainings, New Perimeter also conducted a roundtable on March 25 with pro bono coordinators at Bogotá-based firms, with approximately 30 lawyers in attendance. The panel was organized by Fundación Pro Bono Colombia and Universidad del Rosario, and the topic was “Global Pro Bono Strategies During the Pandemic.” In addition to Dewey and Andrews, the DLA Piper team involved in the roundtable also included senior associate Rodrigo Garcia Moncada (Mexico City) and associate Pablo Sanchez-Navajas (Madrid).

The project is part of a nine-year relationship between New Perimeter, the Universidad del Rosario and Fundación Pro Bono Colombia to support a culture of pro bono in Colombia. Over the course of the collaboration, New Perimeter has sent lawyers to Colombia to teach law students and practicing lawyers about legal social responsibility, the use of pro bono to address unmet legal needs and increase access to justice, and the history of pro bono in the United States and around the world. This is the second time New Perimeter has connected virtually with Colombian students.

“It is always a pleasure to interact with enthusiastic law students and lawyers in Colombia and to help generate discussions about pro bono,” said Andrews. “Although nothing can replace in-person visits, the remote sessions worked very well, and we were impressed by the level of thoughtful engagement.”
