Mexico Appleseed Project
New Perimeter is working with Mexico Appleseed on a project in which DLA Piper lawyers help Mexico Appleseed in creating a sustainable pro bono culture and network in Mexico. The project includes five major components:
1.) Assisting the Mexican Pro Bono Network: DLA Piper attorneys who organize and administer the firm’s domestic pro bono initiatives have traveled to Mexico to work with the Mexico Appleseed staff and to discuss the structure and challenges of the law firm’s national program. These attorneys will continue to provide active support the Mexico Appleseed staff as it develops the Mexican Pro Bono Network.
2.) Helping promote a transparent tax and corporate structure for NGOs in Mexico: A Mexican-born attorney from the firm’s Washington, DC office has initiated discussions with the Hewlett Foundation in Mexico City and has begun providing pro bono assistance to the Foundation concerning a tax initiative.
3.) Assisting Mexico Appleseed’s efforts in the area of consumer financial education: This component of the project is under development.
4.) Teaching seminars to law students at the Universidad Panamericana: The firm’s US Pro Bono Partner, her staff, and other DLA Piper attorneys are involved in teaching courses relating to pro bono legal activity. They delivered several short courses to Mexican law students during the Spring 2009 semester and will be teaching at the Universidad Panamericana and the Instituto Technologico Autonomo de Mexico in 2010.
5.) Assisting Mexico Appleseed’s efforts in the area of Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC): A team of New Perimeter lawyers is currently assisting on a Mexico Appleseed project to help immigrant minors who arrive in the U.S. without an adult family member.
