Advising the Peruvian Multiparty Parliamentary Women’s Caucus on Victim Protection Mechanisms
In mid-2010, New Perimeter embarked on an important project in Peru with the International Republican Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization whose mission is to “advance freedom and democracy worldwide by developing political parties, civic institutions, open elections, democratic governance and the rule of law.” To support IRI’s work with the Peruvian Multiparty Parliamentary Women’s Caucus, New Perimeter sent a team of lawyers to work with this group of congresswomen to address the nation’s growing domestic violence problem.
Peru’s Family Violence Law was passed in 1993, and strengthened in 1997 to include some important reforms. However, certain aspects of the law continue to seriously limit access to justice for battered women. New Perimeter was asked to research global best practices with respect to domestic violence victim protection and work with the Caucus to bring Peru’s new law in line with those practices. While in Peru, the New Perimeter team presented their research on best practices and made recommendations for strengthening the new law.
