Imparting Critical Legal Skills
Since 2013, New Perimeter has provided an intensive weeklong seminar on legal writing and analysis to law students at the University of Zambia (UNZA) in Lusaka, Zambia. The project is carried out in partnership with lawyers from corporate client Boehringer Ingelheim and local lawyers from DLA Piper Group Firm Chibesakunda & Co. Advocates (CCO). Local lawyers from Stanbic Bank (a member of the Standard Bank Group) and Africonnect Zambia have also been involved.
The training module was developed specifically for UNZA in response to specific needs expressed by the law faculty. The course focuses on legal writing skills, including general principles of writing as well as instruction on how to research, formulate and support a strong legal argument. The emphasis is on learning by doing, including active class participation and interactive exercises. Local lawyers deliver sessions on the practical aspects of working at corporate law firm and as in-house counsel at Zambian companies.
UNZA is the premier law school in Zambia, but it is severely under-resourced. In addition to the training, the DLA Piper Foundation has issued grants to UNZA for the purchase of law books and technical equipment. Boehringer Ingelheim has donated laptop computers and offered a fully paid internship for a UNZA student in Europe.
