About our work

New Perimeter and project partners have delivered week-long courses on pro bono in São Paolo, Brazil with the aim of supporting the country's pro bono community. This project provided an opportunity to bring together law undergraduates and graduates along with a cross-section of the Brazilian legal profession to contribute to the discussion on access to justice and legal practice in Brazil.

Key deliverables

  • Developed and delivered courses about pro bono for Brazilian law students and legal professionals

Key facts

  • More than 60 students and legal professionals participated in the courses, including law students, graduate students and practicing lawyers at law firms and in-house departments.

We can see that pro bono is a great instrument to change the reality of the population in Brazil. We have a long history of poverty and discrimination and pro bono can be the [missing piece] to this equation to solve the problem. — Brazilian law student at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) Law School
This training comes at a really interesting time because the bar association (OAB) in Brazil recently lifted its restrictions on lawyers doing pro bono work and tasked a small committee with looking at what types of regulations are needed. — Oscar Vilhena Vieira, Dean, Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) Law School
Lawyers are very engaged and interested in doing pro bono right now. We had twice as many people attempt to sign up for these classes then we had spaces available and that is a testament to the demand. — Marcos Fuchs, co-founder and executive director, Instituto Pro Bono
