Returning to My Alma Mater as a Teacher

Teaching for me is about sharing knowledge. But it's always daunting, for many reasons. For example, will the teaching team work well together? Will you be able to answer that one difficult question, and will you add value to the intellectuals with whom you are sharing knowledge?!

Thankfully, none of these concerns materialized  during my second opportunity to join a New Perimeter team of lawyers to deliver pro bono legal training to law students at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa on special economic zones.

Once we literally broke the ice – by throwing a bag of ice around the classroom – it was clear that it was going to be a stimulating week for all.

The students were prepared and engaged, and the DLA Piper team more so.  There was never a dull moment, and we were all fully immersed in the topic of special economic zones.

I was also fortunate to connect with and forge meaningful relationships with certain students and DLA Piper colleagues during this week.

As an alumnus of the course, I was very proud of the level of students the course has attracted. I left feeling excited about Africa’s next generation of trade and investment policy advisors.

Thank you again to New Perimeter in involving me in this project!
