DLA Piper adds pro bono counsel Suzanna Brickman in Washington, DC

DLA Piper announced today that Suzanna Brickman has joined the firm as pro bono counsel in the Washington, DC, office.

In this role, Brickman will work with the firm’s domestic and global pro bono initiatives. In the United States, she will support DLA Piper’s various Signature Projects, which are designed to commit significant resources to tackling major social issues, including education, access to justice, domestic violence, juvenile justice and serving veterans. She will also work closely with New Perimeter, DLA Piper's nonprofit affiliate that provides long-term pro bono legal assistance in under-served regions around the world.

Deeply committed to volunteer and pro bono legal service, Brickman has provided pro bono representation to clients in a range of areas, including access to justice, education, women’s rights, immigration and asylum, and service to veterans. Prior to joining DLA Piper, Brickman was a litigation associate at Morrison & Foerster LLP where she was involved in a number of domestic and international pro bono projects. Her pro bono experience includes the representation of a refugee seeking asylum based on past persecution in her home country, advocating for the release of Central American women and children in an immigration detention facility, conducting comparative research regarding rape and sexual violence laws and prosecutorial best practices, and providing legal services to organizations serving veterans and low-income individuals.

“As we continue to expand the breadth and depth of our pro bono services, we need strong leaders committed to our mission of bringing about equal access to justice for all,” said DLA Piper US Pro Bono Partner and Director of New Perimeter Lisa Dewey. “Suzanna’s credentials, experience and passion for serving those less fortunate are an ideal fit for our pro bono team and we are thrilled to welcome her to the firm.”

Brickman received her J.D. from Stanford Law School, her M.A from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and her B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University. During law school, she participated in the Stanford Death Penalty Clinic, where she assisted in post-conviction proceedings for two unrepresented death row inmates. Following law school, Brickman served as a one-year Fellow in Higher Education Law in the Office of the General Counsel at Johns Hopkins.

In 2012, the Bar Association of San Francisco recognized Brickman with its Outstanding Volunteer in Public Service Award for her long-standing work with College Track, an organization working with underserved and at risk Bay Area high school students.
